TaTU SRC PRO explains reasons for demonstration

Addressing the media, the Public Relations Officer of the TaTU Students Representative Council (SRC), Musa Mahmudu, explains the motive behind the demonstration.

"We are saying that over the years, we have been paying school fees, and if you take the school fees structure, there are levies for development, for sanitation, and for medical examinations....The development levy is supposed to improve this university, yet if you go to the lecture halls, the heat alone will drive you out of class," he said.

"The stench around the HND block is unbearable. you can't even stand it. If you see the hostel, you would think it's an abandoned structure. Meanwhile, students are paying 1,200 cedis for the hostel. They also pay an additional 100 cedis in hostel dues, but if you go there, it looks like an abandoned structure." he added.

Ghanaians sympathise with TaTU students

Ghanaians on social media have reacted to the violent clash between the Tamale Technical University students and the police.

YEN.com.gh compiled a few of the reactions below:

@Akomiah Sekyi said:

"Is it wrong for the students to demand for what is due them? In fact something they have paid! What was the role of the police? To cause injury or to calm nerves? Thinking unconventionally."

@Bryt also said:

"Right now, if anyone of them gets seriously injured, it will be the burden of his or her family.. It’s good we demand for the right thing but in doing that, let’s apply wisdom and do it in a better way ..We can have a demonstration that won’t result in casualties."
