Italian Referee Hit With Serie A, UCL Suspension After Allegedly Threatening a Player

Italian referee has been blocked from officiating in the Serie A and UEFA Champions League after he allegedly threatened a player in Kuwait.

Fabio Maresca will not officiate a match in the Serie A for a month and will not referee the Champions League clash between PSV and Sporting CP.

According to Corriere della Sera via Football Italia, the alleged incident occurred during a Kuwait Premier League encounter between Kuwait SC and Al-Arabi on Friday.

Serie A referees in the spotlight before

The report adds that on Tuesday, October 1, a player lodged a complaint against the referee. According to the report, the official reportedly said:

“See you next time,” while other accounts suggest he said, “See you next time, I’ll kill you.”

Maresca has officiated one Serie A match this season, the 2-2 draw between AC Milan and Torino.

Serie A referees have grabbed the headlines for the wrong reasons this year. In March, Marco Di Bello was heavily criticised for his controversial performance in AC Milan vs Lazio.

He brandished 11 yellow and three red cards and was later suspended, per 90min.

Reason Bruno Fernandes' red card was overturned

Earlier, YEN.com.gh reported that Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes' red card was overturned after the club appealed.

Fernandes caught Tottenham's James Maddison with a high-foot challenge, and referee Christ Kavanagh produced a controversial straight red card.

The Portuguese midfielder will now be available for United's next three games after the decision was rescinded.

YEN.com.gh also reported that Southampton defender Jack Stephens is set for an extended period on the sidelines after his red card vs Manchester United.

He was sent off on September 14, and as a result, Stephens was banned for three games in accordance with FA guidelines on serious foul play.

However, his conduct attracted further scrutiny, with the officials reporting that he swore at them.
