The economist, banker, and former Bank of Ghana Deputy Governor joined mainstream politics as the running mate to Nana Akufo-Addo in 2008. They assumed office at a time where corruption was looming within the country with a sickening economic downside. The duo promised to uphold democracy and improve the economy under the new tenure.

Early life

The renowned politician and Economist was born at Tamale in Nothern Ghana. How old is Bawumia? He is 56 years old as of the year 2019. Dr Bawumia was the second born of his mother, who had five children but twelfth of his father, who had 18 children. He attended a primary school called Sakasaka located in Tamale, and later in 1975 joined Tamale secondary school. After his graduation, he went to study Banking in the United Kingdom, where he acquired a Diploma in the Chartered Institute of Bankers.

In 1981, he was the Ghana United Nations Students Association president. In 1987 at Buckingham University, he pursued a first-class honors degree in Economics. Mahamudu Bawumia later pursued a master’s degree in Economics in Oxford at Lincoln College and also acquired his doctorate in Economics at Simons Fraser University in 1995.

The Vice President’s late father was formerly the Council of State Chairman from 1992 to 2000, known as Alhaji Mumuni. The politician’s father was a man with a considerable reputation. He was a lawyer, a teacher as well as a veteran politician who gave up his life to serve others.

His mother, Hajia Mariama Bawumia, was among the first female students to be admitted to Wesley Girls High School. She, in 2019, clocked 80 years old. This saw his son, the famous politician, and Economist wishing her a happy birthday and described her as his pillar. The politician is married to Samira Bawumia, and together they have four children. There is no mention of names of Bawumia children, and hence less is known about them.

Career

Vice president Bawumia, was an assistant economics professor at Hankamer School of Business at Baylor University between 1996 and 2000. In 1988, the renowned politician was awarded the Young Research Award. In 2000, he worked at the Bank of Ghana as an Economist. He rose to become the Assistant Bank Governor. In June 2006, He was appointed by the then President J.A Kufuor as the Deputy Governor of Bank of Ghana.

He accomplished a lot in his profession as an experienced economist including:

  • He implemented a framework to direct fiscal policy and how it should be conducted as the head of the Department of Monetary Policy and Financial Stability at the Bank of Ghana. This saw the inflation rates reduced to 10.2 percent by 2007 from above 40 percent in 2000.
  • He spearheaded the opening of the banking industry to competition. This led to an increase and availability of credit to the economic or private sector.
  • He managed to put the banking sector in check as he was in charge of financial stability while he served as the Deputy Governor.

In the 2008 elections, he was the running mate to Nana Akufo- Addo, the New Patriotic Party candidate. In 2009, he served the Economic Commission of Africa as a consultant. He also served under the International Growth Governments of Developing countries. In Siera Leone, he worked as an advisor to the central bank.

From October 2009 to October 2010, he served at the center for the study of African economies as a Senior Research Associate at the University of Oxford. In 2011, he was appointed to the African Development Bank as a Resident Representative for Zimbabwe until he was re-appointed for Ghana’s presidential elections to run alongside candidate Nana Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic Party for the Vice President position.
