Students who attack teachers and destroy school properties should be arrested - GNAT

Over the last week, there have been several reports of vandalism and attacks by final year students sitting for the West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examinations (WASSCE), including launching attacks of invigilators and school authorities.
Some schools have made headlines for students attacking authorities and destroying school properties to register their displeasure.
The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has, in a bid to put an end to all these acts of indiscipline displayed by the students, called on authorities to arrest students who perpetrate violence against its members.

Their directive comes after several reports of students perpetrating acts of violence and vandalism against school authorities and properties.
According to Philipa Larson, the National President of GNAT, reports of threats of assault on teachers over WASSCE is worrying and must be dealt with.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Education Service (GES) has directed school authorities to deboardenise any student who has been involved in any acts of vandalism during the period.
The GES Director-General, Prof Kwasi Opoku-Amankwa, noted in a statement that any destruction of school property should be surcharged against students found guilty of the riot, adding that criminal acts committed should be reported to the police for investigation.

YEN.com.gh earlier reported that final year students at Ndewura Jakpa Senior High Technical in Damongo have destroyed the school’s properties in an angry protest.
Their actions follow the 1.5 metre social distancing seating protocol in the examination hall which they were strongly against.
They first destroyed the lighting system in the school, which plunged the whole campus into complete darkness, and then destroyed the louvre blades at the administration block of the school.
