Ghana's former president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, attended the one-week observance for the late Member of Parliament for the Akwatia constituency, Ernest Yaw Kumi.

The memorial even in honour of the late MP, was held at the Akyem Wenchi Funeral Grounds on Friday, August 29, 2025.

Ernest Kumi was a member of Akufo-Addo's New Patriotic Party. He died on Monday, July 7, 2025, at the age of 40 from a heart attack.

The late MP was one of the young politicians tipped to help the NPP's resurgence after the party's seismic loss to the National Democratic Congress in the 2024 presidential elections.

Many top officials from the New Patriotic Party (NPP), including former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Matthew Opoku-Prempeh and Minority Leader of Parliament Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, were present at the solemn event.

Akufo-Addo's arrival at the event grounds was met with a loud reception from supporters. They hailed and cheered him on as the president alighted from his car and made his way to the stage.

In a video sighted by YEN.com.gh, the former president was seen interacting with a group of traditional performers.

He took out a fat wad of 200 cedi notes and, without counting, doled it out to one of the drummers.

Tagoe Sisters, composed of twins Lydia Dedei and Elizabeth Korkoi Tagoe, showed up at the event to show their support for the late MP.
