The Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2024 is being officiated by 26 centre referees, 30 assistants, and 12 VAR officials.

Kenya's Peter Waweru Kamaku was picked among the 26 centre referees, alongside other Kenyans - Gilbert Cheruiyot and Stephen Yiembe in the assistant referee posts.

Which AFCON 2024 matches has Peter Waweru officiated?

Waweru officiated the group-stage match between Morocco and DRC Congo, which ended in a 1-1 draw.

In 2021, he was appointed to oversee the Total CHAN2021 final between Mali and Morocco.

The university don officiated at his third straight AFCON tournament after making his debut at the AFCON 2019 edition held in Egypt.

How much will Peter Waweru get as a referee?

According to BBC Sport, all referees at AFCON matches are paid $1,200 (KSh 194,928), the amount that was raised by former CAF president Ahmad Ahmad in 2017.

This figure was revised from $750 (KSh 121,830) and has remained unchanged, even as the federation increased this year's prize money.

This means Waweru, as a centre referee, will get the KSh 194,928 plus other lump sum payments, including awards and fees, should he emerge among the top referees in the tournament ending February 11, 2024.

Waweru, a holder of a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Pure Mathematics and a senior lecturer at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), is highly experienced at this level.

The monies will be paid to each player as qualification bonus for advancing to the next round of the ongoing AFCON.
