Ghana’s men’s 4x100m relay team came agonisingly close to winning a medal at the 2025 World Athletics Championships, finishing fourth in a dramatic final on Sunday, September 21.
Running under rainy skies in Tokyo, the quartet of Ibrahim Fuseini, Benjamin Azamati, Joseph Paul Amoah and Abdul Rasheed Saminu clocked 37.93 seconds, just shy of the bronze medal position.

Ghana finishes fourth in 4x100m relay final
The result was bittersweet. After qualifying for the final with the fastest time across all heats, hopes of a historic podium finish were high.
Fuseini opened the race with a 10.55-second leg before handing over to Azamati, who once again produced a blistering run of 8.96.
Amoah powered through the bend in 9.48 seconds before handing the baton to Saminu, who had already reached the 100m semi-final earlier in the competition. The 27-year-old then blazed down the home straight in 8.94 seconds.
Despite his late charge, he was edged out by Dutch sprinter Elvis Afrifa, who helped the Netherlands secure bronze with a national record of 37.81.

While Ghana will rue their chances, the United States continued their dominance in the event, sealing their 10th world title with a world-leading time of 37.29, per World Athletics.
The quartet of Noah Lyles, Kenny Bednarek, Courtney Lindsey and Christian Coleman held off a strong Canadian team, with Andre de Grasse anchoring his side to silver in 37.55.

Afrifa’s heroics denied Ghana a medal by just 0.04 seconds, a result that left fans proud yet heartbroken.
Despite the disappointment, Ghana’s run remains one of the standout performances of the championships, especially after a challenging campaign in other events.

According to ESPN, the prize breakdown saw the USA walk away with US$80,000, Canada claim US$40,000, and the Netherlands earn US$20,000, leaving Ghana to settle for fourth and US$16,000.
