Ruben Amorim’s team head into the fixture in strong spirits, having put together a five-game unbeaten run in the English Premier League.

A win over Everton could lift United into fourth place, depending on how other weekend results unfold before Monday’s kick-off.

Cunha has been central to their recent resurgence, finding the net in the 4-2 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion and standing out in the 2-2 draws against Nottingham Forest and Tottenham Hotspur.

Cunha suffers 'training accident'

In an unusual twist, the first word of Cunha’s injury surfaced not from the club, but from the official Visit Altrincham Instagram account.

Per Express Football, the 26-year-old had been scheduled to appear at the town’s Christmas lights switch-on on Saturday evening but withdrew just hours before the event, with organisers explaining he had suffered an “accident in training.”

Their Instagram post stated:

"Unfortunately Matheus Cunha has had an accident in training today and will not be able to attend tonight’s Christmas Lights Switch on in Altrincham due to medical reasons.
"There’s lots of exciting performances to come including Luzahnn of Livin’ Joy and Sam Aston, winner of Dancing on Ice 2025, who is Chesney in Coronation Street will be switching on the lights!"

Givemesport understands the issue is not thought to be serious, but it was sufficient to rule the Brazilian out of the event, where he had been scheduled as one of the headline guests.

His presence was expected to draw considerable interest from local residents and Manchester United fans alike.

With the club heading into a congested run of fixtures, United are expected to prioritise his short-term recovery to keep him available for the upcoming games.

Although the setback is considered minor, the decision to pull him from the appearance was made early to avoid any unnecessary risk.
