KYIV, UKRAINE - Ukraine's celebration of Independence Day was short-lived following an attack by the Russian military that resulted in the deaths of 22 civilians.
Russia launched a rocket strike on a Ukrainian train station on Wednesday, 24 August, leaving many casualties and injuries. The attack on the train station also marked six months since Russian troops invaded the Eastern European country.
According to SABCNews, Ukraine's president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, warned civilians that Russia could launch an attack on the country's 31st anniversary of independence from the Soviet Union and cancelled all public celebrations.
Zelenskyy said in a video address to the United Nations Security Council that rockets hit a train in Chaplyne, 145km west of Russian-occupied Donetsk in eastern Ukraine.

The Ukrainian president added that a little boy was killed when the first missle hit his home and the other 21 deaths were related to the train station attack. According to BBC, this recent attack comes after 50 people were killed following a train station attack in April.
Ukraine's Foreign Affairs Minister Dmytro Kuleba took to social media to share images of the attack's aftermath and stated that Russia needed to be stopped before more lives were lost.
Here's what netizens had to say about the recent attack:
"Horrible. Just Horrible."
"Putin's fascist terrorist group in Russia is insane. Ukraine must retaliate a hundredfold. Ukraine will win."
"It’s just shocking. They continue in their spiteful wrong-headedness. Ukrainian resolve will only stiffen because it has no choice! Ukraine cannot turn back - it must resolutely follow the path it has charted for itself. Eventually it must bear fruit. Good must triumph over evil."
"Horrific. Ukraine has already endured 7 months of this."
"I'm so sorry this is happening. I hate this war on Ukraine!"
