The 8 biggest news events of the year 2018

The year 2018 came with its own share of ups and downs, to which Ghanaians reacted in a myriad of ways.

A number of unfortunate incidents rocked the country so hard that the effects from some of them may remain for a long time.

YEN.com.gh brings to you eight major events that rocked Ghana in the year 2018:

1. Boakye Agyarko dismissal:

Former energy minister, Boakye Agyarko lost his job due to the controversial Ameri deal. His dismissal sparked debates all over the country.

He was replaced by former lands and natural resources minister, Peter Amewu.

2. Ebony’s death:

Ghanaian musician, Ebony Reigns, passed away on Thursday, February 8, 2018. She was killed instantly in a head-on collision whilst returning from Sunyani to Accra after a visit to her mother.

Her assistant and longtime friend, Franklina Yaa Nkansah Kuri and soldier Atsu Vondee were also killed in the fatal accident

3. Kofi Annan’s death:

Former UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan, died on the morning of August 18, 2018 in Bern, Switzerland, at the age of 80 after a short illness.

4. Menzgold’s issues with the Bank of Ghana and others:

Menzgold Ghana Limited had a run in with the law with respect to their operations. Aside state agencies such as the Bank of Ghana and the Security and Exchange Commission raising concerns, clients besieged the premises of the company demanding their funds.

5. Number 12-Kwesi Nyantakyi:

Kwesi Nyantakyi, the former president of the GFA, fell from grace to grass when news of corruption in Ghana football was exposed in an investigation carried out by the Tiger PI crew.

6. Paa Kwesi Arthur’s death:

Amissah-Arthur died on June, 29 2018 at the 37 Military Hospital after reportedly collapsing at the Air Force Gym during his routine morning workout session.

A state funeral, attended by several dignitaries, was held for him on July 27, 2018 at the Accra International Conference Centre.

7. Policeman attacks Midland Saving and Loans customer:

There was public outrage on social media after the video of an armed police officer brutalizing a lactating mother went viral on Friday.

The video showed the policeman hitting the woman on her head with an umbrella and further punching her in the face.

8. 7 people shot in Ashanti Region

Seven suspected armed robbers were gunned down by a team of personnel from the Ashanti Regional Police SWAT Unit at Poano near Anhwiakwanta on the Kumasi-Obuasi road.
