It robs people of their dignity, education, their rights and common decency.

Maryann Achieng Odira, a teacher at Onganga Primary School, Homa Bay County always wondered why one of her learners was often late to class or would sometimes not show up to school.

To some extent, the educator thought that maybe her pupil was just being a truant or a case of indiscipline.

But the truth shocked Maryann, she found out that the little girl was fighting her own battles back at home.

The primary school teacher decided to trek to the girl’s home and at least get a better explanation that backed up her behaviour at school.

"She is 14 years old but still in Grade Two. If things were a bit better, she would be in Form One," the kind teacher told TUKO.co.ke in an exclusive interview.

The learner and her family live in the interior parts of the village.

When Maryann reached there, she was perturbed to learn of the conditions her pupil lived in.

The little girl lives with her grandmother and two cousins in a dilapidated one-room house that is rigged with holes.

"Her grandmother does not have a phone and therefore communication becomes hard sometimes," Maryann added.
