Phil was born on 30th January 1987 in Lancashire. He grew up with his younger brother Martyn. The two of them went to Bacup and Rawtenstall Grammar School. In 2008, he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in English Language and Linguistics from the University of York. In 2009, he got a Master of Arts in Video Postproduction with Visual Effects from the same university.
Before his YouTube fame, he was a dog walker and a car washer. He also worked at a veterinary clinic and even had an acting role in a movie. All of these jobs prepared him for his life as a Youtuber.
The two friends have had impressive careers both solo and in collaboration. While YouTube is the central part of their careers, they also do other things that they are equally excellent at. They are multi-faceted, and that is clear to all of their fans.
Lester posted his first YouTube video when he was 19. Since then, his channel has grown and now has over 4 million subscribers as of May 2021. He also has several other channels where he posts amazing content.

In 2015, they had video cameo appearances in the UK cinema release of Big Hero 6. They also voiced two gorilla princes named Majinuni and Hafifu in the episode The Lost Gorillas ofThe Lion Guard.
In 2016 August, Howell and Lester developed an app called The 7 Second Challenge. The app is based on a YouTube challenge that Phil started on his channel. However, in 2019, the app was discontinued. In 2017, they released a party board game called Truth Bombs.

Since they started their YouTube channels, the two have been posting on what seems to be a regular schedule. However, one day Dan Howell stopped uploading. After one year of being inactive, he posted a coming out video and has been MIA on his YouTube since then. The reason for his silence remains unknown.
