Joycelyn, born on 15 January 2021, has been diagnosed with a posterior fossa tumour, a serious condition that her medical team at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra says requires immediate neurosurgery.

Joycelyn's diagnosis and first procedure

Her father, Philip Amoako, explained that an MRI scan confirmed the presence of the tumour and indicated that it was obstructing the normal flow of fluid within Joycelyn's brain, causing dangerous fluid build-up.

Doctors responded by performing the first of two required procedures, inserting a ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt to redirect the excess fluid from her brain into her abdomen.

"Thanks be to God, we have been able to afford that procedure," Mr Amoako said.

Surgery still needed as funds run out

While the shunt procedure has been completed, the more critical operation, a craniotomy to physically remove the tumour from Joycelyn's brain, has not yet taken place.

In a report shared by Star FM on August 21, 2026, the estimated cost of the pre- and post-operative care for this surgery stands at GH¢80,000, roughly US$7,400, a sum the family is struggling to raise.

Mr Amoako has appealed to individuals, churches, businesses, and charitable organisations across Ghana to contribute towards his daughter's treatment.

The family were given a deadline of Tuesday, 20 October 2026, to gather the funds so that surgery can proceed without further delay.
