The EC declared Prof Seidu the MP-elect after he emerged as the sole candidate for the by-election, which was scheduled for Saturday, 30 September 2025
The Returning Officer of the EC for the Tamale Central Constituency, Muniru Musa, was captured in a video on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, making the declaration.
According to Musa, Prof Seidu was the only candidate for the by-election following the expiration of the 10-day extended deadline after the initial withdrawal of the PNC and LPG from the race.
"In line with CI 127, the Electoral Commission reopened nominations for another 10 days. Those 10 days elapsed on Sunday. As it stands, it means that only Prof Alidu Mahama Seidu stands nominated, and according to CI 127, which reads, 'where the time allowed for delivery of nomination papers has ended and on the day before the elections, and only one candidate stands nominated, the candidate shall be declared elected'," he said.
"In view of this, I, Muniru Musa, Returning Officer for the Tamale Central Constituency, in working with CI 127, hereby declare Professor Alidu Seidu Mahama as the MP-elect for Tamale Central Constituency," he announced.

Prof Seidu contested the Tamale Central parliamentary seat on the ticket of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).
This declaration by the EC makes him the first person to enter Parliament without parliamentary elections in the Fourth Republic.
Before contesting the Tamale Central seat, he was the Executive Secretary of the Water Resources Commission (WRC).
Prof Seidu was also the head of the Political Science Department at the University of Ghana.
How Tamale Central seat became vacant
The Tamale Central by-election was necessitated by the demise of the late MP for the area, Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed.
The late MP tragically lost his life in a military helicopter crash, together with seven other prominent Ghanaians, while on national duty.
Following this, the EC opened nominations for a by-election to elect a new MP to replace the late Environment Minister.
