Ghana Police Arrest 10 Suspects Over Alleged Financial Crimes Against Rural Banks

The Ghana Police Service has busted some notorious gangs for allegedly perpetrating financial crimes against rural banks across the country.

The suspects, numbering 10, were arrested after a shootout which resulted in the death of three people.

In a video circulating on social media, the suspects were conveyed to the cells at the Headquarters of the Ghana Police Service in the now infamous Black Maria armoured vehicle

The arrest was announced on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno.

Speaking to the media during a press conference held at police headquarters, IGP Tetteh Yohuno stated that the arrests followed six months of investigations and intelligence gathering.

Relying on surveillance and information from informants, the IGP explained that police stormed hideouts in the Ahafo, Western, Central, Eastern, and Ashanti regions, including towns such as Esereso, Adagya, Ejisu, and Obuasi, to bust the criminal syndicate.

“We immediately got to work after painstaking investigations, working with credible informants and analysing available data. I am pleased to announce that we have dismantled the gang behind these robberies,” he said.

CID boss explains how the criminals operate

COP Lydia Donkor, the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service, said that the gang had carried out 11 attacks from April 10, 2025, to September 14, 2025.

She further explained that the gang always attacked the banks in the early hours of the morning with pump-action guns.

According to COP Donkor, the banks attacked by the gang included the Lower Pra Rural Bank at Shama, Asokore Rural Bank in Asokwa, Nwabiagya Rural Bank at Offinso, Bosomtwe Rural Bank at Suntreso, Kakum Rural Bank at Elmina, Mfantseman Rural Bank in Winneba, South Birim Rural Bank at Achiase, and Ecobank’s Ahafo Kenyase branch.

The CID boss disclosed that on September 18, they had a major breakthrough with the operation, dubbed "Cobra," when intelligence officers arrested the gang leader, Kwasi Egyir, also known as Cobra, at his hideout at Esereso Adagya.

“The weapons were police rifles snatched from officers on duty at Ecobank’s Kenyase branch on September 8, 2025,” she said.

The police displayed the weapons found in possession of the gang as part of the Cobra operations.

The weapons seized by the police included a machete, hammer, three AK-47 assault rifles, seven pump-action guns with 96 rounds of ammunition, three Bruni pistols, one M&P pistol, and six vehicles.

Aside from these, the police also found GH¢18,845 in cash, and foreign currencies including US dollars, Liberian dollars, Nigerian naira, and CFA francs.

Police arrest suspect connected to market fire

In a related development, YEN.com.gh reported that there was a fire incident at the Timber Market that started around 1:17 am near the Aayalolo School on Saturday, September 14, 2025.

The Ghana Police arrested the suspect who started the fire after an initial investigation, and is aiding with further probe.
