Adenta residents embark on another demonstration over footbridges

Residents of Adenta and Madina, have embarked on yet another demonstration on Monday, November 12 over the abandoned uncompleted footbridges and are calling on authorities to fix them, YEN.com.gh has learnt.

The peaceful demonstration which started at 5:00 am saw residents come out in their numbers to register their displeasure over the abandoned footbridges.

Some 30 policemen are reported to be on site walking with the demonstrators so as to make their action free of any chaos.

The recent demonstration follows a riot which took place on the Adenta-Madina highway after a car knocked down and killed a young lady who was crossing the road.

Angry residents, in registering their displeasure over the recent death, blocked the highway and burned tyres which caused a total gridlock.

Police rushed to the scene to calm situations down but tempers had already flared and the law enforcers had to resort to rubber bullets and tear gas to disperse the crowd.

A woman, after the incident, claimed the police aimed at her car and shot at it causing her and her 14-year-old son to be hit by a bullet.

The police however rubbished the claim and indicated that they used the right crowd control measures during the riot which occurred on November 8, 2018.

In the aftermath of the chaotic demonstration President Akufo-Addo waded into the situation and commiserated with the bereaved family.

The Ministry of Roads and Highways has also announced that work on the uncompleted pedestrian bridges will commence within a week.

Temporarily, the Ministry in collaboration with the Interior Ministry has requested the Ghana Police Service to deploy officers of the Motor Traffic Unit to prevent further deaths.

However, in reacting to the situation, boss of the Ghana Health Service, Dr Anthony Nsiah-Asare, called on Ghanaians to allow the laws to work and not take them into their own hands.
