Couple invite only 12 people to cut cost for wedding ceremony

In a very simple nuptial, a couple left many jaws dropped when they invited only twelve people to their wedding ceremony which cost less than GHc 9,000.

With only twelve people in attendance, Professor Ken and his fiancée surprised many when they tied the knot in a very simple wedding ceremony, which cost nearly GHc 9.000.

Ken, who is a professor at UC Santa Barbara, proposed to his fiancée on an empty tract of land which she described as romantic.

The couple decided on a fairly modest ceremony even though the bride's parents offered to contribute up to $2,000.

But they planned to spend under $2,000 on the wedding because they thought it was financially prudent to use all their savings to go toward their new house.

That meant that corners would have to be cut for the event; a lot of corners.

‘‘We didn't want the wedding to feel frugal, though, or like an elopement. And I wanted to get married in Laguna Beach, the famously ritzy resort town where I'd grown up. The only answer was to keep it small. Really small,’’ the bride said.

At the time the couple decided to have a small wedding ceremony ‘‘people thought (they) were nuts.’’

‘I spent a lot of time telling offended friends and extended family that it wasn't personal. There would only be 12 people there in total, including the ones getting married,’’ she added.

The wedding bouquet cost $80 and the lunch for 12 including champagne came to $880 in total.

The bride avoided wedding boutiques and went in for a designer ivory cocktail dress with bead trimming on clearance at a department store, which cost $110.

Surprisingly, they got a cosy small park on a cliff, just above a beach for $180 to hold the ceremony.

‘‘I hadn't anticipated the biggest side benefit of a miniature wedding: it was nearly stress-free,’’ the bride who appeared very elated said.

What more, her tiny ribbon flowers and pearls cost her $5.

The couple stood under a homemade chuppah in a Jewish marriage canopy, in a rose-filled park overlooking the ocean.

And amidst the sound of waves crashing all around them and sea lions barking on the rock just offshore, they kissed in front of the small circle of family and friends to seal their union.

In total, the elegant wedding cost less than Ghc 9.000.
