15-year-old serving 2-year jail sentence in adult prison claims police changed his age

- A teenager serving a 2-year jail term claims he’s a minor

- Adom alleges that the police that handled his case altered his age and wrote 18 years

- He reveals that he’ll be 15 years old in three months' time

In a bid to secure bail for a 15-year-old boy who has been serving a two-year jail sentence in adult prison, Crime Check TV has raised concerns about the age of the teen.

The suspect, Adom, was convicted for two years for stealing, but the minor has denied any involvement and says his nephew rather did it. He says that he will be 15 years old in 3 months.

And has revealed that the policeman who handled his case altered his age and wrote 18 as his age.

Sadly, Adom's parents are not alive to affirm the correct age of the minor, which has worsened his case.

According to the Juvenile Justice Act, Domestic law in Ghana, minors should not be kept in adult prisons, rather, the law makes provision for such children to be sent to a Senior Correctional Centre.

Adom was however put into adult prison custody. And Crime Check TV has highlighted the issue via its Facebook platform.

His case happens to be one of many kids in our country's prisons, ‘‘all because some unscrupulous and corrupt police officers allegedly inflate the ages of these children.'’

In a related story, the Commission of Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) has secured bail for a 15-year-old boy who has been remanded into prison custody for about one year.

The suspect, Issah Yakubu was arrested by the Gambaga police in August 2018, for allegedly leading a gang to steal a motorbike.
