Explainer: Government gives numbers to support newly created jobs

- Government says it has created 611,397 new jobs from 2017 and 2018

- Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, Ignatius Baffour Awuah, said that 343,458 new jobs were created by Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) during the period under review

- Meanwhile, government says most of people who lost their jobs in the banking sector have found themselves working in other sectors of the economy

It’s been over two and half years since the New Patriotic Party (NPP) came into office after winning the 2016 elections.

In this period, the Akufo-Addo government has touted some achievements and one of the most trumpeted has been job creation.

Although the unemployment rate in the country is still staggering, the government claims to have created a lot of jobs.

Indeed, there have been some policies implemented to ensure that jobs are created for Ghanaians in every corner of the country.

The One District On Factory policy and the Planting for Food and Jobs programme have been at the forefront of this job creation initiative.

According to government, the latter has created some 611,397 new jobs in the formal sector.

Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, Ignatius Baffour Awuah, said the jobs were created between 2017 and 2019.

The Minister made this known when he addressed the media at the Ministry of Information Meet-The-Press Series on Thursday, August 15.

Giving the breakdown, he stated that 343,458 new jobs were created by Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) during the period under review.

According to him, “the ever famous Planting for Food and Jobs Programme created jobs” in the last 24 months.

He disclosed that unemployment rate has dropped from 11.9% in 2015 to 7.1% in 2019.

Explaining further, Mr. Awuah said a total of 11.6 million people, representing 63 percent of the working age population, are in different types of employment.

He added that 5.36 million are not working because of schooling, incapacitation, domestic activities or unemployment.
