Alban Bagbin is “the best person” from the NDC to be Speaker under an Akufo-Addo presidency, Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko has stated.

“Yes, he is true green NDC – through and through. But, if the nation must have a Speaker from the opposition who can be expected not to unduly frustrate the work of Government, then Bagbin is he,” the leading member of the governing NPP said.

Bagbin took the oath of office on Thursday, January 7, 2021.

He was elected as the seventh Speaker of the eighth Parliament in a contentious election, polling 138 votes against 136 of the former Speaker Professor Mike Oquaye.

Bagbin, Otchere-Darko argued cannot be used by the NDC to satisfy the agenda of former President John Dramani Mahama against the interest of the nation due to his experience in governance.

According to him, the veteran former lawmaker has the maturity, experience, and importantly does not dislike Akufo-Addo.

Meanwhile, there have been calls for the expulsion of the NPP’s legislator for Tema West from Parliament.

Carlos Ahenkorah shocked the nation on Thursday, January 7, 2021, when he snatched ballot papers during the election of the Speaker of Parliament.

The latest to join those calling for the Ahenkora’s expulsion is Insurance analyst, Edgar Wiredu.

Speaking on Accra-based CTV, Wiredu likened the conduct of the MP to terrorism.

“What Carlos Ahenkorah did is another form of terrorist act,” he stated.
“Such actions, you don’t entertain them, you don’t encourage them; that man, like I said…must be expelled from Parliament,” he added.

In other news, hundreds of supporters and sympathisers of the NDC have thronged the streets of Damango to demonstrate against the reelection of Akufo-Addo barely 24 hours after taking the oath of office.

Donning party colours, they burnt tyres as they marched through the principal streets of the capital of the Savanna Region on Friday, January 8, 2021.

The NDC and its presidential candidate in the 2020 polls have rejected the outcome as declared by the chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensa.
