President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has revealed something most people do not know about former president Rawlings.
Aside belonging to the two major political parties, both Nana Addo and Rawlings were able to set aside their political differences to foster unity.
According to Akufo-Addo, the late Jerry John Rawlings was there for him when he became President and faced certain difficulties.
“From my entry into office, right up to the day he was called by his Maker, he remained a good friend. In moments of difficulty in my presidency, he came through for me,” he noted.
Paying his tribute to Rawlings at his pre-burial service, Akufo-Addo said they had a mutual commitment to public service.
Akufo-Addo noted that he did not always see eye to eye with Rawlings, but they later became very good friends before the latter’s demise.
He however added that with time, things changed as both he and Rawlings came to see value in each other, and understood, to a very large degree, their respective perspectives.
Meanwhile, President Akufo-Addo says history will be “kind” to former President Jerry John Rawlings for his contribution to Ghana’s democratic growth.
Speaking on Wednesday, January 27, 2021, at the state funeral of the late first president of the fourth republic, Akufo-Addo commended Rawlings for ditching dictatorship for the current democracy the country is enjoying.
According to the president, a positive verdict will be rendered on Rawlings' contribution to the “evolution of our nation and the entrenchment of its democratic institutions and culture.”
