A spokesperson of John Mahama’s legal team, Dr. Dominic Ayine says he finds the unseriousness with which the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is taking the ongoing election petition trial troubling.
“This is a very serious matter, and our friends in the NPP are behaving as if there is nothing at stake,” the former Deputy Attorney General and Justice Minister stated.
“There is everything at stake when it comes to this matter.”
He made the remarks on Wednesday, February 3, 2021, on Accra-based Citi TV.
He also touched on the dismissal of the application the former president filed before the Supreme Court to be allowed to inspect some pink sheets of the Electoral Commission (EC).
Mahama, the petitioner in the election petition trial, wanted to inspect the EC’s pink sheets for comparison.
But the Court in its ruling held that the applicant already has the documents he was requesting, thus, the application was denied.
According to Ayine, the Court’s dismissal of the application was “a bit frightening.”
Jean Mensa, the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), has since her December 9 declaration of the presidential results had multiple threats on her life, Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko has disclosed.
The disclosure by the founder of the Danquah Institute and leading member of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) was in reaction to comments by the president and founder of IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe, on the security beef up around the EC boss.
Franklin Cudjoe asked her to resign after the ongoing election petition hearing, explaining that it was unhealthy to be distrusted and be guarded by “loads of soldiers” each time she is going to work.
Defending the decision to heighten Mensa’s security, Otchere-Darko said in a social media post:
“…The threats to her life heightened to the highest dangerous point that any public servant should endure, for the security services to consider it appropriate to offer her the highest form of protection they could.”
Mensa will soon mount the witness box in the ongoing election petition trial to testify to the credibility of the results she declared on December 9, 2020, which gave President Nana Akufo-Addo another four-year term.
According to the results as declared by Mensa, Akufo-Addo won the election by collecting over 51% of the valid votes cast.
