Mahama must drop Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang for a Ga running mate in 2024 - Ras Mubarak

Ras Mubarak has kicked against retaining Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyeman as running mate for the 2024 general elections.

Speaking on Starr Chat on Starr FM on Wednesday, March 24, the former legislator urged former President John Mahama to drop the former Education Minister should he accept to lead NDC into the 2024 elections.
The former Vice-Chancellor partnered with Mahama for the 2020 elections, losing to President Nana Akufo-Addo and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Akufo-Addo defeated former President John Dramani Mahama in the said election to secure another four-year term; collecting 51.302% of the votes cast against the latter’s 47.359%.
The votes difference between the two candidates stood at 517, 231, representing a four percentage point, one of the highest since 1996.
“In my candid opinion, John Mahama should run, Jane Naana was fantastic on the ticket but I think we could do with a change in a running mate,” Ras Mubarak told Nana Aba Anamoah.
He said the former president should go for a Ga running mate.
There is heightening pressure on the hierarchy of the NDC and its supporters to give Mahama a “free pass” to lead the party in the 2024 presidential elections.
A Political Science Lecturer had already warned that retaining Opoku-Agyemang as running mate will lead to another defeat for the NDC, a party in turmoil.
Dr. Osei Bonsu said the former president can only recapture the presidency for the NDC with a new running mate who identifies with the grassroots of the party and can sell the party to the general public.
The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) predicted that the NDC will win the 2024 presidential elections but needs a new candidate to do that.
MP for Ashaiman Constituency, Ernest Norgbey, however, rejected the EIU’s suggestion, stating that the NDC does not need to field a new candidate for the 2024 presidential elections.
According to him, the former president is the party’s surest bet to regaining power in 2024.
“NDC cannot go into this election with any other candidate rather than John Dramani Mahama,” Norgbey told Joy News.
