The incident, which occurred in a small bush behind their residence, has raised serious questions about electrical safety and the response of utility personnel.
Kekeli Adza Bernard, a four-year-old nursery student, was reportedly playing when he came into contact with a live electric wire that had reportedly been dropped from a pole by some ECG personnel.
His mother was fetching water at the time of the incident.
Father narrates son's death after electrical accident
Collins Adza, the distraught father, shared his harrowing experience, detailing how he learned of his son's death.
“I was on the farm when someone called me, telling me that my child had suffered from an electric accident. I rushed home and saw a lot of people in the house, and it dawned on me that something serious had happened,” the deceased's father told YEN.com.gh.
Upon entering his house, Mr Adza was confronted with the grim reality.
“When I got to the house, I asked what happened, and I was told that on Sunday [September 14], an electric wire was removed from the pole and put into the bush at the back of the house. So this afternoon, my son was at the back of the house playing, and when he touched a leaf, he was struck by the electric current, as the wire was still live, "he stated.
Unheeded warnings and negligence concerns
The incident appears to stem from an earlier electrical fault.
According to Collins, there was a problem with the wire on Saturday evening, leading them to contact the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
He said, “On Saturday evening, there was a problem with the wire, and so we called ECG personnel who came and cut the wire, dropping it on the ground [in the bush]. They didn't warn us that it was live. Even before leaving for the farm, I saw the wire there, but all I had in mind was that it was not live.”
This statement suggests a potential lapse in safety protocols by the ECG personnel, as the dropped wire was allegedly left live and unattended, leading to the fatal accident.
The child's remains have since been deposited at the mortuary, as investigations into the incident are expected to commence.
