Holt wants $38m used for education and health

Holt's best friend, former employer and Republican lawmaker, Edwin “Smokey” Smith, learned shortly before his death that the divorced and childless man had made investments that had paid off in a big way-to the tune of $3.8 million.

“He seemed to have what he wanted, but he didn’t want much,” he said.

It turned out that Holt bequeathed his entire fortune to the tight-knit community. Although Smith had suggested that Holt think of his community, he never expected him to leave everything to them.

“I know he didn’t have a whole lot of family, but nonetheless, to leave it to the town where he lived in … it’s a tremendous gift," he added.

Town officials have since invited organisations to apply for grants of the money left behind.

"Hinsdale will utilise the money left very frugally as Holt did,” said Kathryn Lynch, town administrator.

Holt, a former production manager at a grain mill, used to comb through financial publications and had invested in a communications mutual fund before the advent of the digital age.

According to his 81-year-old sister, Alison Holt, her brother learnt the importance of investing and not wasting money from his father.
