NPP's Kennedy Agyapong Blames NDC for Late MP Ernest Kumi's Death: "They Have No Shame"

  • Kennedy Agyapong has blamed the NDC for the death of Akwatia MP Ernest Yaw Kumi, citing stress and pressure
  • He claimed the late MP confided in him about the toll of the parliamentary election petition case filed by the NDC
  • Dr Mahamudu Bawumia also linked Kumi’s passing to the NDC’s court battle over the 2024 parliamentary elections

Flagbearer aspirant of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, has attributed the death of the late Member of Parliament for Akwatia, Ernest Yaw Kumi, to stress and pressure allegedly mounted by the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Speaking at a campaign event in the Akwatia Constituency ahead of the by-elections on September 2, 2025, Agyapong disclosed that he had personal conversations with the late legislator, in which he stated how challenging things had become.

Kwaku Bonsam spotted campaigning for NDC in Akwatia by-election: “Ɛyɛ zu”

"I'm surprised the NDC has the courage, without shame, to contest the Akwatia by-election. Ernest lost his life as a result of what they put him through. He doesn't have thick skin like me, and so he allowed things to worry him. When the Koforidua judge charged him with contempt, I invited him over for a conversation. In our conversation, I could sense that he was in great pain over the court issues," he said.
"I'm not a doctor or a pathologist, but I can tell you based on the conversations I had with him that it was stress and pressure that killed him. Those who put him through the pressure have no shame. They have come back here to contest for the seat," he added.

Bawumia also links Kumi's death to NDC

Agyapong's comments come after former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia made similar allegations, linking Kumi's death to the NDC's court case against him after the 2024 general elections.

Dr Bawumia, who was in Akwatia over the weekend, claimed that the NDC's decision to contest the 2024 Akwatia parliamentary results in court put unbearable pressure on the late legislator.

“Ernest Kumi got elected in 2024 after he lost the seat in a prior election. However, the NDC did not accept the results and filed a suit against him. He could not sleep because of the court. He was hounded and intimidated. So, his blood pressure just kept rising. He died 26 days after the court’s final verdict," he remarked.
