Boakye Agyarko Reportedly Withdraws From NPP Flagbearer Race to Contest for Chairman

Former Minister for Energy, Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko, who was said to be vying for the flagbearer position of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), has reportedly withdrawn from the race to contest for the Chairmanship.

This was disclosed by renowned broadcast journalist, Nana Yaw Kesseh, on the Peace FM Kokrokoo morning political show on Friday, September 5, 2025.

If this report is confirmed to be true, then Boakye Agyarko's decision would change the dynamics of the NPP chairmanship race.

The NPP will be holding elections for its national executives after the presidential primary, which is slated for January 31, 2026.

So far, two prominent members of the party have declared their intentions to contest for the national chairmanship position.

They are John Boadu, former General Secretary, and Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, the current Ashanti Regional Chairman, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

A brief profile about Boakye Agyarko

Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko is a Ghanaian economist, politician and former banker.

He previously worked for the Bank of New York for many years and rose through the ranks to become vice-president of the bank.

In terms of his political career, Boakye Agyarko was among the founding members of the NPP in 1992 and has occupied several key roles, including chairman of the Danquah-Busia Club of North America and a brief tenure as a trustee of the Busia Foundation.

He also served as the NPP’s coordinator in North America. In 2012, he was appointed National Campaign Manager for the party’s presidential election.

During the 2016 election, he was named Policy Adviser to the NPP’s presidential candidate.

After the party won the 2016 presidential election, he was appointed as Ghana's Energy Minister in 2017 by the then-president, Nana Akufo-Addo.

In 2023, Boakye Agyarko contested for the NPP flagbearer primary, but lost heavily to former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

The renowned politician is also regarded as one of the best political strategists in the NPP's fold, and his potential candidacy for the chairmanship position is likely to generate interest and competition within the party.

Ghanaians welcome Boakye Agyarko's chairmanship bid

After Nana Yaw Kesseh disclosed Boakye Agyarko's decision to contest for the chairmanship position of the NPP, some Ghanaians took to social media to share their views.

Boakye Agyarko slams NPP's early primaries decision

Meanwhile, YEN.com.gh reported that Boakye Agyarko criticised the party's NEC decision to hold early primaries.

He described the decision as 'nonsense' and argued that it went against the party's traditional reorganisation structure.

Agyarko stressed that electing competent grassroots executives had been more crucial for the NPP's effective mobilisation.
