Against Southampton, he was superb. He made important blocks and scored his first goal for the club.

"I'm not surprised. At this moment he is not fit, he's not 100% speed. He needs the games to go up to it. We see glimpses now and once he's there he will do much better. We are happy with him and especially today with his game," Erik ten Hag said via the BBC.

The Netherlands central defender will compete for starting spots with Harry Maguire, Leny Yoro, and Victor Lindelof.

Man United legend Paul Scholes voiced his concerns about De Ligt before the season started.

Why did Bayern sell Matthijs De Ligt?

Last season, De Ligt started on the bench at Bayern under Thomas Tuchel. Eberl said there was a reason they sold the defender despite fans being against it.

“I followed [the fan response], including the petition. I know that many fans identify with him,” Eberl said via Football365.

“Nevertheless, I had to make this decision because we also had to sell players. We felt more comfortable with Upamecano and Kim because they can defend higher up the pitch. And then an offer came in for De Ligt.”

The 25-year-old has cemented his spot for now and will be aiming to take his career, which has stalled, to the next level.
