Dozens Killed in Crowd Clashes in Guinea Football Game

At least 56 people have lost their lives following clashes at a football match in Guinea's city of Nzérékoré.

The game, which pitted local side Nzérékoré against visiting team Labe, was held on Sunday afternoon in honour of Guinea's military leader, Mamady Doumbouya.

What happened in the ill-fated Guinea match?

Local media and witnesses have reported that the clashes started after the fans disputed a red card decision by the referee in the 82nd minute.

Fans started throwing stones before police lobbed teargas in an attempt to disperse the crowd. A video shared by Reuters shows fans fleeing the stadium by scaling the walls as others were trampled.

Medical services in Guinea overwhelmed

The government, through Prime Minister Oury Bah, has termed the incident tragic. Local hospitals have been overwhelmed as medical professionals continue to assist the injured.

"The government is monitoring the development of the situation and reiterates its call for calm so that hospital services are not hindered in providing first aid to the injured," said Bah as quoted by CNN.

The Prime Minister did not divulge the details of what happened inside the stadium but promised more information would follow later.

"There are bodies lined up as far as the eye can see in the hospital. Others are lying on the floor in the hallways. The morgue is full," said a source close to Daily Mail.

Guinea players call out FA

In other news, YEN.com.gh reported that Guinea fans criticized their football association for filing an appeal to disqualify Tanzania from AFCON 2025.
