Bawumia's food items to Wa flood victims expired - NDC
- It has emerged that some food items recently supplied by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to flood victims in the Upper West Region had expired
- The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) first brought the issue to public attention at a press conference
The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has accused Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of distributing expired goods to flood victims in the Upper West region.
The Vice President was in the region over the weekend and offered to donate relief items, including rice, sachet water, mattresses and cooking oil to the victims.
The items were donated to flood victims in the Wa and Sissala East municipalities.

However, the opposition NDC has accused Dr. Bawumia of distributing expired goods to the flood victims.
The Graphic Online reports that while some of the cooking oil had September 10, 2018 as expiry date, the rice did not have expiry date at all.
Persons who received the items are reported to have suffered health implications, with majority complaining of stomach upset.
Communication officer of the NDC, Prosper Puo-ire, said it is unacceptable that the Vice President will be this careless to distribute expired goods to persons in their time of need.
He therefore called on the government to immediately replace the expired items with wholesome food.
“We are yet to come to terms with why our Vice President will choose to exacerbate the suffering of our people by exposing them to unquantifiable health challenges at a time they are grappling with pulling the pieces of their lives together after suffering a disaster,” Mr Puo-ire said at a press conference on Tuesday.

“We are calling on the President on whose behalf Dr Bawumia donated the expired consumables to our people and, indeed, the entire (ruling) New Patriotic Party machinery in the region to come out with contrite hearts and apologise profusely to the good people of Upper West Region and particularly the disaster victims whom this particular act has left in greater pain,” he added.
Meanwhile, in a related development, the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), has taken responsibility for the distribution of the expired food items to flood victims.
Narrating circumstances that led to the incident, the Upper West Regional branch of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), George Ayisi said:
“We came here to help bring relief to the people. Unfortunately when we were offloading the items onto the vehicle, we had some expired items that had been stored in the warehouse in Wa, and some of the loaders unfortunately picked some boxes, and added them to the items that were being loaded, and that is why we had this problem.”
