4 reasons why John Mahama must win 2020 general elections
John Dramani Mahama is preparing for another shot at the presidency after winning the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) presidential primaries.
The ex-president became the NDC’s presidential aspirant-elect after beating off competition from six other candidates.
Mahama polled a whopping 213,487 votes, representing 95.23% of the total votes cast.

The other competitors – Prof. Joshua Alabi, Alban Bagbin, Goosie Tanoh, Dr. Ekwow Spio Garbrah, Sylvester Mensah and Nurudeen Iddrisu – had 5% of the votes combined.
It is, therefore, now set for Mahama to contest the 2020 elections against incumbent President, Nana Akufo-Addo.
Here are four reasons why Mahama deserves a second chance in 2020:
1. To correct all the wrongs he did while in power
John Mahama is obviously a popular man within the NDC, but among the larger populace of Ghanaians, the story is a bit different.
This is because there are a lot of things that people believe he could have done better while he was president.
There were many allegations of corruption which went unchecked and maybe the man deserves a chance in 2020 to correct his wrongs.
2. To prove he is not incompetent as we are made to believe
Secondly, John Mahama was touted as corrupt and incompetent while he was in power. In fact, this was something that the NPP used in their campaign.
It did work against the NDC and Mahama during the 2016 elections and till date, many people still use those tags on him.
Therefore, the only way Mahama can prove that he is not corrupt or incompetent is to be given a second chance.

3. To close the 1 million vote gap
The NDC’s loss in the 2016 general election was historic and disgraceful. This is because the party lost by more than one million votes.
Mahama, therefore, remains the first sitting president in Ghana to have lost an election and also the NDC candidate to have lost by the heaviest margin since 1992.
There is a chance to correct that, and his election as NDC’s flagbearer is takes him a step closer to that.
4. Failure to win will make 2024 a difficult task for the NDC
It is obvious that the NDC know the importance of Mahama’s candidature and that is why they massively voted for him to become the party’s flagbearer.
However, should he fail to return the NDC to power in the 2020 election, that would make it harder for the party in 2024.
Currently, Mahama is the face of the NDC but there is no one line up after him. Also, considering the fact that he can serve for just four years more, winning the 2020 elections will be very key for the NDC.
