Mahama reacts to Bawumia’s claim; says he has always supported Free SHS

- John Mahama has reacted to claims by Dr. Bawumia that he is against the Free SHS programme

- According to Mahama, he implemented a progressively Free SHS programme for over 350,000 students

- He therefore challenged Dr. Bawumia to provide evidence to the fact that he is against the policy

Former president John Dramani Mahama has dismissed reports to the effect that he is against the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) programme being run by the Akufo-Addo-led government.

According to a press release sighted by YEN.com.gh on Myjoyonline.com which was signed by his special aide, Joyce Bawah Mogtari, he explained that vice president Bawumia was economical with the truth when he recently spoke about Mahama’s reaction to the Free SHS programme.

Mahama explained that he could not possibly be against the policy, especially after progressively implementing the same programme for over 350,000 students.

He therefore challenged Dr. Bawumia to provide evidence of him ever saying he is or was against free SHS.

He argued that just like all well-meaning Ghanaians, he believes “free SHS must be made better instead of the ad-hoc implementation we are witnessing under the Akufo-Addo administration.”

YEN.com.gh earlier reported Mahama saying he would continue the Free SHS programme if he assumes office as president.

Mahama went on to say that the current policy is beset with several challenges, such as the Double Track System, which keeps some students at home while others are in school.

He added that the fate of SHS students who graduate also is uncertain, and becomes a source of worry to stakeholders in education.
