The President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Roland Affail Monney, has taken back his words and apologised for his comments on the assault on Citi News' Caleb Kudah.
Caleb Kudah was arrested on Tuesday, May 11, 2021, for filming abandoned MASLOC vehicles allegedly left to rot on the premises of the national security ministry.
Affail Monney came under public backlash for saying Caleb Kudah breached the GJA's code of ethics for filming in a restricted zone.
In a statement issued and signed by Affail Monney, he stated he did not have a clear idea of the whole incident when he was contacted for his view on the issue.
“I render my sincerest apology for any misimpression created that I was insensitive to the plight of the journalists but excited about the excesses by the National Security operatives. Indeed, those excesses pass for wickedness at its most naked nastiness. And I totally denounce them,” he wrote.
To clarify his earlier comments, Affail Monney said he had sketchy details on the incident at the time he was interviewed on it.
“Admittedly, the information I had was sketchy. So I reluctantly went ahead to speak to the issue,” he said.
YEN.com.gh earlier reported the president of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Roland Affail Monney said Caleb Kudah breached a GJA code of ethics.
According to him, filming at the National Security premises was in breach of the Association’s code of ethics.
In a report filed by JoyNews, Affail Monney indicated that Caleb had clearly breached Article 13 of the GJA constitution, which clearly states that 'Journalists must respect embargoes on stories'.
Meanwhile, a private legal practitioner, Samson Lardy Anyenini, has stated that Caleb Kudah committed no crime by filming at the car park of the National Security Ministry, which is reportedly a security zone.
In a report filed by CitiNews, Lardy Anyenini said if journalists will take their cameras, or pens and capture what is being misused or wasted, they are not committing any crime but are simply doing what they have to do.
