Upper East Region: 9 bodies of miners trapped in mining pit at Talensi retrieved

Information reaching YEN.com.gh indicates that nine miners that were trapped in a pit at the Gbane mining area in the Upper East Region have died.

The bodies were retrieved two days after the pit caved in on them while they were mining.

According to a report filed by CitiNews, the police stated that the deceased miners unfortunately got trapped in a pit at the Moabok mining site following a downpour on the night of Monday, May 31, 2021.

The Upper East Regional Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), ASP David Fianko-Okyere said the search is still ongoing to ensure that no more bodies are trapped in the mining pit.

“We are doing everything possible to ensure that we exhaust all means that there is no other person is still trapped dead or alive,” he said.

In the meantime, the police say no arrest has been made.

YEN.com.gh earlier reported at least eight miners have been trapped in a pit at Gbane in the Talensi District of the Upper East Region.

According to a report filed by YEN.com.gh, the rescue team is racing against time to save lives.

The miners were believed to have been trapped in the underground tunnels on Tuesday, June 1, 2021.

Flooding after a heavy downpour has made the rescue effort difficult, putting the lives of rescuers in danger.

Meanwhile, additional pumping machines have been deployed to the site to facilitate draining to enable the rescuers to reach the trapped miners.
