Ghana records huge drop in gold production in 16 years - Chamber of Mines
- Gold production in Ghana has dropped to its lowest in 16 years.
- 4 million ounces of gold was exported in 2020 as against 4.5 ounces in 2019
- The situation has been described as troubling especially when Ghana is a net exporter of gold
The Ghana Chamber of Mines has alerted that gold production in the country has dropped.
In their annual report, President of the Chamber, Eric Asubonteng, explained that gold production dropped 12.1% to 4.02 million ounces in 2020 compared with 4.57 million ounces in 2019, representing the biggest fall in 16 years.
“The performance of Ghana’s minerals sector was muted in 2020 compared to the preceding year,” he said in a speech at the 93rd annual general meeting held virtually on the theme: “Positioning Ghana as a Mining Support Services Hub.”
Gold production by Ghana’s large-scale mines fell 4.8% to 2.8 million ounces in 2020, while the small-scale gold production fell 26% to 1.18 million ounces on supply chain disruptions.

The legislator took to his Twitter page expressing frustration over Ghana’s failed promises that do not catapult citizens to economic freedom.
“Point is not about not wanting to help but the frustration about the pain of not able to satisfy 100s of people seeking such help. We need to uplift our people through policies that can effectively employ them,” he expressed.
