  • Caicedo went in studs-up on a challenge against Pape Matar Sarr but wasn't even booked by referee Anthony Taylor
  • The incident happened after a series of Marc Cucurella's errors gave the home side a 2-0 lead inside 11 minutes

Moises Caicedo was lucky to remain on the pitch after a studs-up challenge on Pape Matar Sarr during Chelsea's away game to Tottenham on Sunday evening.

The Blues had fallen behind to an early two-goal lead after two Marc Cucurella's slips allowed Dominic Solanke and Dejan Kulusevski to capitalise.

Jadon Sancho halved the visitors' deficit as Enzo Maresca's side started to find their rhythm in the game.

The game could have taken a turn for the worse for the West London side had Caicedo been sent off in the 33rd minute.

The Ecuadorian went into a 50-50 challenge but ended up leaving his studs on Sarr's shin. Referee Anthony Taylor elected against showing him any card with the VAR agreeing with the decision.

Why Caicedo escaped a red card vs Tottenham

The Premier League later explained that the VAR deemed that there was no serious foul play to warrant a red card.

"VAR checked for a potential red card following a challenge by Caicedo on Sarr and confirmed the referee’s call of no serious foul play."

To make matters worse for Spurs, it was Caicedo who won a penalty early in the second half that Cole Palmer converted to draw Chelsea's level. Enzo Fernandez added a third for Maresca's side before Palmer put the game beyond the host's reach with an ice-cold penalty.

Heung-min Son pulled one back in stoppage time but it was too late for Ange Postecoglou's side to rescue anything.
