Ghana Card: National Identification Authority Begins Registering Children Below 15 at GH¢310 cost

  • The National Identification Authority has announced the start of the registration of children under the age 15
  • According to a statement from the National Identification Authority, it will cost the same as the existing premium services
  • The National Identification Authority also outlined the documentation needed for registration in a statement

The National Identification Authority (NIA) has begun registration of children aged six to 14 years for the Ghana Card.

This registration is starting at the authority's Premium Centres nationwide.

This registration will cost GH¢310, according to a statement from the National Identification Authority.

This is noted to be the approved fee for services at premium centres.

Parents or Legal guardians are to present either a valid Ghanaian Passport of the child or the original copy of the child's Birth Certificate or a Ghana Card holder parent or legal guardian who can vouch for the child.

The Ghana Card makes it easy for Ghanaians to prove their identity or citizenship.

With the Ghana Card, accessing services such as health, education, communication, insurance and banking has been streamlined.

Ghanaians living abroad who hold a Ghana Card can travel to Ghana without a visa.

The authority says on its website:

"It is important to register to ensure that you are not excluded from the formal economy and from economic, social and political activities in Ghana. The Ghana Card is mandatory for use in all transactions which require an applicant to establish his or her identity."

Recent introduction of new fees for Ghana Card

In February, the National Identification Authority introduced new fees for Ghana Card services at designated registration centres.

These included first-time registration, card replacement and record updates.

According to a public notice, first-time registration and record updates would each cost GH¢310.

Piloting of the Ghana Card abroad

In September 2024, the National Identification Authority extended Ghana Card services to Ghanaians in North America as part of a pilot exercise.

The first beneficiary cities were Ottawa and Ontario in Canada, and Washington DC and New York in the United States.

The National Identification Authority also said at the time that its officials and technical partner were also training embassy staff to serve as registration officers for the Ghana card.

These staff members are working as registration officers in the first phase of the pilot exercise to register Ghanaians abroad.

The registration fees approved by parliament varied by region, with ECOWAS nationals paying $55, the rest of Africa $75, and the rest of the world $115.

NIA disconnects GRA from Ghana identity verification

In August, YEN.com.gh reported that the National Identification Authority cut the Ghana Revenue Authority off from the Ghana Card verification services

Samson Asaki Awingobit, the Executive Secretary of the Importers and Exporters Association, told YEN.com.gh at the time that this affected businesses negatively.

The National Identification Authority reported an estimated debt of over GH¢150 million from various government entities in 2024.
