Easter Road Crash: VIP Bus involved in Another Fatal Accident on Accra–Kumasi Road

One person has been confirmed dead and several others injured following a head-on collision between a VIP bus and a Toyota Prado at Akyem Sekyere on the Accra–Kumasi Highway.

Citi News reported that the crash occurred on the dawn of Thursday, April 2.

It forced the Motor Traffic and Transport Department of the Ghana Police Service to divert traffic at both the Apedwa and Asiakwa sections of the highway.

The injured were rushed to nearby health facilities for treatment. The cause of the road crash is yet to be established.

The accident triggered major gridlock, leaving travellers stranded for hours, particularly as many journey across the country ahead of the Easter festivities.

Authorities have advised drivers travelling from Accra to Kumasi to reroute through Kyebi from the Apedwa stretch, while those heading from Kumasi are being diverted through Asiakwa to rejoin the main road at Apedwa.

Recent fatal road crashes in Ghana

On April 1, four people died after a sprinter bus was involved in a tragic road accident at Sefwi Asempanaye in the Juaboso District of the Western North Region of Ghana.

The bus was travelling from Kumasi to Oseikojokrom.

The driver lost control after the bus developed a brake failure, causing it to veer off the road and crash into a culvert by the roadside.

On March 31, four people also died following a road crash on the Buipe–Tamale highway. The crash involved a minibus and a truck at Sawaba No. 2.

The minibus involved in the crash was travelling from Buipe to Kumasi.

On January 11, a crash at Suhum Mankrong on the Accra-Kumasi Highway led to one death and 37 injuries.

3News reported that the 37 people who sustained varying degrees of injuries included 21 males and 17 females.

In a separate crash, seven people died, and 18 others were injured following a head-on collision between a Sprinter bus and a truck at Komenda Asamasa on the Cape Coast–Takoradi Highway.

That road crash on January 12, 2026, remains the deadliest of 2026 so far.

All seven victims, comprising three females, one of whom was pregnant, a baby and three males, were pronounced dead on arrival at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital.

A female passenger who had earlier been transported to the hospital was also pronounced dead, bringing the death toll to seven.

Fatal Eid Al-Fitr road crash

YEN.com.gh reported that three people died and one was left in critical condition, following a road accident at Santasi Apire Himang in the Ashanti Region.

The incident occurred at about 5:30 a.m. on March 20, when a tipper truck loaded with sand, heading towards Himang, reportedly suffered a tyre burst.

This crash occurred on an Eid Al-Fitr holiday.
