Joe claimed that he had thought his father died at the age of 64; however, with the date of birth on the passport, it appears he was 76 years old at the time of his death. According to Joe, his father, Oteng, had lied to him and faked his date of birth.

He also stated that his late father refused to tell him about his entire Ghanaian family, which he had never met, while also being secretly married to another woman besides his mother.

He made this disclosure in his YouTube docuseries, 'Hidden Roots.' He explained that his father arrived in the UK from Ghana in the 1960s, built a life, met his white mother, and gave birth to him even though they didn't legally get married.

In his words:

“He wasn’t 64 when he died, like I thought. He was 75. He’d been using a fake age and birthday since moving to the UK.”

Joe embarked on a soul-searching trip to Ghana for the first time. The goal is twofold: meet the family he never knew and return his father’s ashes to his homeland.

“It was the final piece of the puzzle,” he said. “I wanted to go to Ghana, not just to discover my roots, but to understand who my dad really was.”
