Speaking in an interview, Elisa Kumadey, who was the defence attorney in the case, said the issue arose after the US lady, following an argument with her Nigerian husband, kicked him and his three children out of the house.

She then called immigration authorities to report that their marriage was fraudulent and that the man had deceived her.

According to Kumadey, the embattled wife, in a bid to have her husband deported, deleted all evidence that could have proven that their marriage was genuine.

In this vein, the case was brought before an immigration court to determine whether the man had the right to stay in the US in the wake of the allegations made against him.

“It was hard. His wife had destroyed all evidence that showed they both lived as husband and wife. I think she had been advised and destroyed everything, from lease agreements to vehicle ownership documents, she destroyed everything.
“The only saving grace was information, so I had to do some research and get the necessary documents to prove the union was real,” Lawyer Kumadey explained.
