NDC Snatches Akwatia Seat From NPP As Bernard Bediako Emerges Victorious

National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate, Bernard Bediako, has been declared the winner of the Akwatia by-election.
The ruling party politician defeated the New Patriotic Party's Solomon Kwame Asumadu in the election held under heavy police presence.

The Electoral Commission announced that Bediako had polled 18,188 votes while Asumadu got 15,235 votes in the by-election.
Owusu Patrick of the Liberal Party of Ghana polled 82 votes, while there were 303 rejected ballots.
The NDC now holds 185 out of 275 seats in Parliament, alongside four independent MPs, further strengthening its grip on the legislative process.
The election, which took place across 119 polling stations in Akwatia on Tuesday, September 2, passed without any major incidents amid heavy police presence in the constituency.

In his acceptance speech, Bediako said he was grateful to the people of Akwatia for this clear mandate.
"We will not take it for granted and are committed to representing and serving them diligently."
Bediako takes Akwatia, as pre-vote polls projected
Global Info Analytics had projected victory for Bediako in the election. According to the poll, he was tipped to get 53% of the vote while Asumadu was projected to get 47% of the vote.
The by-election came as a result of the passing of former MP Ernest Yaw Kumi on July 7, 2025.
In the 2024 general elections, Kumi polled 19,269, representing 52.83% and the NDC’s Henry Yiadom Boakye pulled 17,206, representing 47.17% of the ballots cast.
NDC has now held the Akwatia seat on six occasions: 1992, 1996, 2008, 2012, 2020 and 2025, while the NPP won the seat in 2000, 2004, 2016, and 2024.
NDC supporters lined the streets of Akwatia to jubilate even before the declaration because of the results.

Meanwhile, the NDC’s Alhaji Sofo Azorka was captured in a video physically confronting the NPP’s Chairman Buga at a polling station in Akwatia.

The third Vice-Chairman of the NDC was seen angrily hitting his opponent’s chest while hurling insults during a heated moment.
Both politicians were in the constituency to monitor the by-election to elect a new Member of Parliament for the Akwatia area.
Before that, police arrested a man accused of tearing down a candidate’s campaign posters at a polling station.
NDC's Collins Dauda sparks outrage in Akwatia
YEN.com.gh previously reported that Collins Dauda had sparked outrage after suggesting Akwatia may be denied development if voters rejected the NDC candidate.
The Asutifi South MP told residents that the government under President John Mahama would fix their roads if they voted for Bediako, drawing heavy online criticism.
