Jean-Pierre Adams may not be a household name especially in the circles of football - but his heartbreaking story has seen the former French star shoot to prominence in recent years.
During his active playing days, the celebrated defender turned out for a number of French clubs including Nice and Paris Saint-Germain.
But as his career entered the twilight years, life, and indeed his journey to stardom, took a rather sudden and tragic twist.
In 1982, aged 34 at the time, Adams is said to have walked into a Lyon hospital to undergo a routine surgery on his knee.
And that would be the last time he walked, talked, or even voluntarily moved any of his muscles again. For nearly four decades now, the Senegalese-born footballer has been bedridden.
According to SPORTbible, Adams' life was horribly turned upside down following a botched operation on his injured knee.
It is understood a major blunder involving a wrong dosage of anaesthetic saw him starved of oxygen, resulting in catastrophic brain damage.
Now aged 73 and a grandfather of two, Adams is incapable of nearly all voluntary movement, with his wife, Bernadette Adams, taking care of him all this while.
In an interview with CNN in 2020, Bernadette, who refused to consider euthanasia divulged how stronger her bond with Adams grew that the footie can actually tell when it is not her tending to him. she said:
"He senses that it is not me feeding him and looking after him. It's the nurses who tell me, saying he is not the same. I think he feels things. He must recognize the sound of my voice as well.
She further revealed despite Adams' health status, they keep buying him presents on every special occasion with the hope that one day, the defender will wake up from his sleep.
"We buy presents like a T-shirt or a jumper because I dress him in his bed - he changes clothes every day."
