He Begged Me to Collect the Money, Says Police Officer Who Rejected Cash Reward After Returning Lost Wallet

• A Nigerian police officer named Sergeant Sampson Ekikere has proved that there are still good officers in the Nigeria Police Force
• Sergeant Ekikere found a lost wallet inside a bus in Lagos, but instead of keeping it for himself, he took extra pains to look for the owner
• The officer finally went to a commercial bank where the owner of the wallet, Lukman Abaja, was tracked and contacted and his wallet handed over to him

A police officer has been praised for his act of honesty which is considered very rare among men of the Nigerian police. He has proved that there are honest policemen in the Force.

The officer named Sergeant Sampson Ekikere found a lost wallet containing cash, a driver's license, and an ATM card. The incident happened inside a Lagos bus when he was going to work.

The wallet belonged to Lukman Abaja who boarded the same bus as Ekikere from Ikeja. The wallet fell from his pocket as he alighted at Leventis Bus Stop.

He went the extra mile to find the owner

Sergeant Sampson quickly set machinery in motion to find the owner of the wallet and to return it. He first called a phone number he found in the wallet, but it was not reachable.

He then went to Lukman's bank where he was eventually tracked and his wallet handed over to him. Narrating the story to Nigeria's number one new site, Legit.ng, Sergeant Ekikere said:

"We joined the same Danfo from Ikeja, then he came down at Leventis. I saw his driving license and phone number was on it and tried my best to reach out to the number but it was not reachable.

"I can't recall, but it was on Friday that I went to his bank and the bank customer care put a call to him, then he came to my place of work and collect it yesterday.

"He begged me to collect the money he gave me and I told him that I did not return his wallet just to get money from him."

Sergent Ekikere said he is serving Nigeria

When Legit.ng contacted Lukman Abaja, the owner of the lost but found wallet, he confirmed that he gave some money to Sergeant Ekikere but that he flatly turned it down. He said:

"Yes, I offered him token to compensate for his act of kindness but he rejected. He stated outrightly that he did it for God and that he didn't want the money. I insisted that am only rewarding the kind gesture but he said NO.

"So at this point, my friends tried to persuade him but he thanked them calmly and said he is serving the nation."

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had previously reported that a Nigerian man who sells chewing gum in Lagos returned an iPhone he picked on the road.

When asked why he returned the phone, the man identified as Husaini said he did so because it doesn't belong to him.

His act of honesty attracted praise on social media when the news broke. The owner of the phone gave him some monetary reward.
