The incident drew immediate attention given the already contentious nature of her legal situation in South Africa.
Adetshina, who has Mozambican roots through her mother and Nigerian heritage through her father, first became the subject of public controversy in 2024 when her eligibility to compete in the Miss South Africa pageant was challenged.
Authorities subsequently revoked her South African identity and travel documents after allegations surfaced that her mother, Anabela Rungo, had fraudulently obtained South African nationality.
Following the revocation, Adetshina left South Africa and was later invited by organisers to represent Nigeria at Miss Universe, a competition she went on to win under the Nigerian banner.
Arrest and Deportation Proceedings
Her return to South Africa brought fresh legal complications. She was arrested in June 2026 on allegations that she had re-entered the country without authorisation and was subsequently released on warning.
The deportation hearing on 19 August 2026 marked the latest development in a case that has drawn sustained public attention and inflamed debate around migration, identity, and belonging in South Africa.
The scenes outside the courthouse on Wednesday underscored the charged atmosphere surrounding her case, with the physical confrontation by protesters adding a new and troubling dimension to an already fraught situation.
