Policeman fires at car over 50 pesewas toll; injures woman in the Central Region

- A policeman in the Central Region has shot at a car because the driver refused to pay a 50 pesewas toll

- The driver was said to have forgotten to pay after he received an emergency call from his boss

- The Central Regional Police commander, DSP Irene Oppong, said the police was yet to start investigations into the matter

A police constable on duty at a checkpoint of the Moree tollbooth in the Central Region has injured a woman after he fired into a vehicle because the driver had refused to pay a 50 road toll, YEN.com.gh can report.

An eyewitness who spoke to Citi News, said the driver of the private saloon car who was travelling from Cape Coast to Accra upon reaching the tollbooth received an emergency call from his boss at work and in the process forgot to pay the 50 peswas toll fee.

The driver reportedly drove off from the tollbooth upon reaching it, and the police constable, in a bid to stop the vehicle, fired at it, injuring one woman in the process.

The incident drew the attention of residents and pedestrians around who chastised the policeman for firing at the vehicle.

Central Regional Police Commander DSP Irene Oppong has reportedly confirmed the incident to the media.

She explained that at about 8pm on Sunday, November 18, 2018, they had a distress call from police officers at the Moree Tollbooth of a constable firing shots at a saloon car there.

DSP Oppong, however, did not admit the reasons behind the gunshots.

She explained further that a woman in the said saloon car sustained some injuries as a result of the gunshot, and has been sent to the Interbetin hospital in Cape Coast for treatment.

“The Police is yet to commence investigations into the matter” the DSP said, adding that the police will address the issues at the right time”.

She however indicated that the Police constable (name witheld) had been invited for questioning to ascertain the reasons behind the shots.
