President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has announced that the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR), Sunyani in the Bono Region is to be named after the late Prime Minister of the Second Republic, Professor Kofi Abrefa Busia.

His announcement follows a decision by the University's Council on August 3, 2018, after the decision had received Parliamentary approval.

He made the announcement at the 4th Congregation of the University in Sunyani today, August 10, 2019.

A representative of the Wenchi Traditional Council, the hometown of the late K.A Busia, Akyeamehene Nana Damoah Koasane Adese-Poku Kofabaye thanked the university and the President for the honour done their son.

Meanwhile, the daughter of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah has expressed her misgivings about naming institutions after past and serving politicians.

She however described the act as a misplaced priority the practice by government to rename public institutions after former politicians.

Speaking in an interview with Joy News, Samia Nkrumah said politicians should rather focus on addressing pertinent problems facing citizens.

“If I were in government I wouldn’t rename institutions. I would make sure that I’m addressing problems and needs of the people and God knows they are plenty,” she said.

Her comments follows concerns raised by some Ghanaians over the renaming of the University of Development Studies by government.
