16-year-old Ghanaian 'SHS' student gets highest score in Africa at International Math Olympiad

- A young Ghanaian 'SHS' student named Roni Edwin has made history after becoming the first Ghanaian to win a medal at the International Math Olympiad (IMO)

- The IMO is regarded as the prestigious math competition in the entire world and Edwin had the highest mark in Africa

Roni Edwin, a 16-year-old Upper 6th Form Student (equivalent to SHS) of the Ghana International School has become the first Ghanaian student to win a medal at the International Math Olympiad.

According to a report by Gis.edu.gh, the brilliant young Ghanaian won a bronze medal at the competition and his score was the highest in the whole of Africa.

Edwin has registered his name as the first Ghanaian to reach that feat since the inception of the International Math Olympiad, the most prestigious math competition in the world, 61 years ago.

Since 2016, the U.S. Embassy in Ghana has partnered with MISE Foundation, Ghana to fund the Math Olympiad training program for top high school mathematicians in Ghana and Roni is a direct beneficiary of all these training programs.

In 2019, Roni Edwin won an award (Honourable Mention) at the UK International Mathematical Olympiad and was also the youngest winner of the Ghana Math Olympiad at age 13 in 2017 and went on to tie first place on the Geometry Exam with a perfect score.

He was also the overall winner of the Ghana Math Olympiad 2018 and 2019, becoming the only student to win the competition back to back. No wonder he made an impression at the World stage.
