Brilliant female student gets over $1m in scholarship money from 18 different colleges

A final year student from Philadelphia, Shanya Robinson-Owens, has been offered over $1 million (GHC5,740) in scholarship money to pursue her college education.

Robinson-Owens, 17, a senior at the George Washington Carver High School of Engineering and Science, applied to over 20 different colleges, hoping to find the school best suited for her.

Among the colleges that have made offers to Robinson-Owens are Moravian College in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, La Salle University in Philadelphia, Temple University in Philadelphia, Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Missouri, and Cabrini University in Radnor, Pennsylvania.

The native of Philadelphia in the United States of America made her family proud when her acceptance letters started rolling in.

Though she did not have any expectations when she applied to the colleges, she was stunned to discover the huge amount she had been given.

''I knew about the scholarships, but I didn't expect it to be this much, at all," she said.

Robinson-Owens's family invested their time and resources to help her when she first began her application process.

Her family began counting all her scholarship packages. They created the hashtag #KeepingUpWithNya to track her progress on social media.

Robinson-Owens is not overwhelmed despite the dozens of options available to her as she has she is still in the process of touring college campuses to evaluate her options carefully and make the best choice.

The high schooler plans to study psychology once she finally settles on a college.

At the George Washington Carver High School of Engineering and Science, her favourite subjects have been chemistry and physics, according to CNN.

Robinson-Owens has a keen interest in journalism as well as she's contributed to her school's news website and podcast.

The brilliant teenager is also a part of her school's yearbook committee.

Robinson-Owens will be graduating from high school in June and will start her college career in the fall.
