The announcement by Twitter that it has set up its African Headquarters in Ghana has been well-received by Ghanaians on social media.

Twitter, in a statement reveald it is "in line with [its] growth strategy... to truly serve the public conversation, we must be more immersed in the rich and vibrant communities that drive the conversations taking place every day across the African continent."

"The choice of Ghana as HQ for Twitter’s Africa operations is EXCELLENT news. Gov’t and Ghanaians welcome very much this announcement and the confidence reposed in our country," said Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in a tweet.

Whilst Ghanaians are excited generally about the news, some Nigerians are not happy, expressing their frustration at their government for losing out on the chance to be the country to host the American company.

"As a champion for democracy, Ghana is a supporter of free speech, online freedom, and the Open Internet, of which Twitter is also an advocate. Furthermore, Ghana’s recent appointment to host The Secretariat of the African Continental Free Trade Area aligns with our overarching goal to establish a presence in the region that will support our efforts to improve and tailor our service across Africa," reads a statement by Twitter on the decision to build a team in Ghana.

"Another Big L for Nigeria who despite having the biggest active social media users, we got overlooked for Ghana. This is obviously because of the anti-business policies of APC and Buhari. Shameful," was the reaction to the news by a Nigerian on Twitter.

"You nailed it. That one called "Idamu" was busy suing @jack when he should be lobbying to have the HQ here. Sad for every one of us in this space," replied another person.
