Arsenal continued their remarkable Champions League form on Tuesday night with a commanding 4-0 victory over Atletico Madrid at the Emirates Stadium.

Viktor Gyökeres netted his first two Champions League goals for the club as the Gunners delivered a scintillating second-half performance to dismantle Diego Simeone’s side.

The breakthrough came shortly after the interval when Declan Rice’s pinpoint free kick found Gabriel Magalhães, who powered home a trademark header to open the scoring.

That goal unleashed a relentless attacking wave from Mikel Arteta’s side.

By the 70th minute, Gyökeres had completed his brace, and Gabriel Martinelli added a fourth to cap off a dominant display.

Atletico were spared further punishment as Arsenal climbed to third place in the 36-team league phase, trailing only Inter Milan and Paris Saint-Germain, while Simeone’s side dropped to 18th.

The result extends Arsenal’s perfect start to their European campaign, per The BBC.

The Gunners began with a 2-0 win over Athletic Bilbao and followed up with another 2-0 victory against Olympiacos, courtesy of goals from Martinelli and Bukayo Saka.

Arsenal make UCL history

The North London outfit didn’t just collect three points, they made a remarkable Champions League history.

According to SportBIBLE, Arsenal has now become the first team ever to win seven consecutive matches against Spanish opposition.

Their opening victory in Bilbao last month followed back-to-back wins over Sevilla in the 2023-24 campaign, along with triumphs against Girona and Real Madrid last season.

The Gunners defeated Sevilla both home and away, including a hard-fought 2-1 win at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán Stadium, while their impressive streak also features a 3-0 demolition of Real Madrid.

Fans will fondly recall Declan Rice’s two stunning free-kicks that helped Arsenal eliminate the Spanish giants last season, sealing a 5-1 aggregate victory to advance in style.

As reported by GOAL, the Gunners will have to wait for another shot at making it eight straight Champions League wins over Spanish opposition, having already faced two in this league phase. Their next opportunity could come in the knockout rounds.

For now, Arsenal will turn their focus to remaining European clashes against Slavia Prague, Bayern Munich, Club Brugge, Inter, and Kairat Almaty.
